What We Do

The J&J Group is a leading investment holding companies in South Africa. Founded in 2000, J&J Group has grown using a multi-faceted growth model, which has included start-ups, joint ventures, partnerships, mergers and acquisitions. Relationships with strategic partners are a key element in guiding our growth. The main focus of the J&J Group is to create long term, sustainable partnerships that evolve into value creating vehicles. Since long term investment is the primary goal of the group, every partnership entered into is based on the capacity and skill sets that are present within each company or project. This approach has allowed the J&J Group to build a variety of mutually beneficial partnerships and working relationships with companies such as Old Mutual, Rand Merchant Bank, AREVA, Verizon, The Tata Group, Murray & Roberts, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Bombardier, Macquarie Bank and SolaireDirect.

Infrastructure

J&J has spent the last few years steadily growing a pipeline of infrastructure opportunities in South Africa and the SADC region, with a particular focus on renewable energy, conventional energy, telecoms and transport infrastructure. Through its partnerships with AREVA and Lesedi Nuclear Services, the group has been able to be involved with the bid submissions for Eskom’s nuclear power plant program. Adding to its portfolio of infrastructure providers, the group also has a 50% stake in Kutluano Engineering Consultants, an engineering consulting and project management firm which in turn owns the successful engineering consulting firm EON.

ICT

The J&J Group has significant presence in the South African ICT industry, with its principal current investment being in TATA Consulting Services South Africa. TCS are a major global participant in the ICT industry and are rapidly growing their presence in South Africa

Gautrain

J&J Group has a significant stake in The Gautrain further solidifying its commitment to growing the infrastructure sector. J&J Group was one of the first entities to acquire shareholding in the project since its incorporation by the original shareholders

In August 2006, First South Securities concluded a merger with the corporate advisory arm of Macquarie Bank Africa, the global, Australia-based bank, thereby creating Macquarie First South. Macquarie First South provides a range of financial services, including a stock-broking service that covers a full research team and a trading and settlement service to institutions, as well as investment banking advisory services

Energy Tech

An important part of the vison of the group is to support ongoing initiatives that contribute to the development of energy supply and resources. The group has ownership control of Utillabs, an energy technology company that has developed a patented, demand-management device and system. The device and system has a wide range of smart grid and energy metering applications.

Renewable Energy

J&J Group has used its partnership with Solaire Direct and Old Mutual to successfully bid on the second round of the South African Government’s renewable energy independent power producer programme (REIPPP). Through this project, two 10 MW solar powered farms have been built, to provide green energy throughout South Africa. J&J has also submitted a bid on the fourth round of the REIPPP in 2014

The J&J Group is part of the Parkway Rose Consortium, which includes Basil Read, Group 5, AIIM, and Bouyges. The Consortium successfully gained preferred bidder status for the construction, maintenance and operation of the Western Cape N1/N2 Toll Road.

  • Developing education initiatives that develop skills relevant to the market needs; skills that lead to jobs and, the dignity of employment.
  • Educating, and/or looking after the welfare of children whose parents’ livelihood has been adversely affected by HIV and/or AIDS
  • Improving the welfare of abused women and children
  • Promoting entrepreneurial models of development delivery that address health outcomes and promote social development anywhere in Southern Africa

JAYENDRA NAIDOO

EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN

In the early 1990’s, as a national Trade Union leader, Jayendra led the Alliance delegation of ANC, COSATU and SACP which negotiated the National Peace Accord in 1991, the forerunner of the country’s constitutional negotiating process. Thereafter, he was a member of the multi-party National Peace Secretariat (comprising the ANC, the National Party and other major political parties) which established the formal network of Peace committees throughout the country. Subsequently, after 1994, he was at the forefront of the establishment by the new Parliament of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) which represented a new framework for social and economic dialogue and negotiation in South Africa. He became the first executive Director of this body in 1995, a position he held until the end of 1998. He has participated in several government and political initiatives, including serving on the selection panel appointed by President Mandela in 1995 to interview and shortlist candidates to South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission to be appointed by President Mandela. In 1997 he was nominated by the Swiss based World Economic Forum as a Global Leader of Tomorrow. In 2000, he co-founded the J&J Group, a diversified investment company.

TLADI DITSHEGO

CEO of J&J INFRASTRUCTURE

Tladi has recently been appointed the CEO of the J&J Infrastructure Holdings. Previously a Business Development Executive of the J&J Group he was the founding Chairman of J&J Infrastructure. Prior to joining the J&J Group in 2004, he was a top-rated Regional Manager at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) responsible for infrastructure development. Tladi was the former Chairman of Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa Limited (ECIC), former Chairman of Kelvin Holdings, and a Board member on J&J Group’s subsidiaries. He is the current Chairman of the Utho Capital Infrastructure SME Fund (capitalized by both IDC and SEFA) since its inception in 2011 and holds a masters degree in Development Economics and Comparative study of Foreign Policy, from Columbia University in the City of New York.

KETSO GORDHAN

DIRECTOR

Ketso Gordhan is currently the CEO of Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) and has previously served as Director General of the Department of Transport, City Manager of the City of Johannesburg, Head of RMB Private Equity team, and most recently Adviser to the Minister in the Presidency responsible for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation. He has been a member of the J&J Group Board since 2011.

DUARTE DA SILVA

CEO OF J&J FINANCIAL SERVICES

Dr Duarte da Silva founded, and is an equity participant in J&J Financial Services (a subsidiary of the J&J Group). In 2006 Duarte initiated and concluded a joint venture in South Africa, with the Australian-based Macquarie Group to form Macquarie First South (‘MFS’). MFS is active in cash equities; advisory and equity capital markets, employing approximately 110 people. He is currently the Executive Chairperson of Macquarie First South Securities, Executive Director of MFS, Chief Executive Officer of First South Financial Services and J&J Financial Services. He also serves on the Board of the J&J Group and Macquarie Africa. Duarte was previously the Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Chairperson of Taita and McCarthy Bank (1998-2001), heading up investments in technology and communication. Prior to that he was a Director and top-rated research analyst with Merrill Lynch South Africa between 1994 and 1998. He qualified in 1990 with a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand

CHRIS JARDINE

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Chris Jardine joined J&J in 2002 as Chief Operating Officer. Chris holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology and BS and MS degrees in Computer Science, all from George Mason University in Virginia, USA. A former Executive Director of Transnet, Chris is a seasoned executive, having worked as CEO, Director and Chairman for various companies in his career. He currently serves as a director of numerous J&J subsidiaries and associate companies.

PAUL BOYTON

NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Currently head of Alternative Investments at Old Mutual, Paul joined Old Mutual’s investment team in 1995, having previously worked as an Investment Banker at Investec in Johannesburg for seven years. He oversees Old Mutual's investments in infrastructure, private equity, impact investment and mezzanine debt

He was responsible for the investments of the main life funds of Old Mutual from 1997 to 2001, during which time the discretionary balanced life funds enjoyed top quartile performance. Paul sits on several external boards, has been an Executive Director of Old Mutual Asset Managers SA since 1998, and has been a member of the J&J Group board since March 2004.

PETER LEVETT

NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Peter Levett qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992 and completed his MBA in 1997 at the University of Cape Town. He is the General Manager of Corporate Finance for Old Mutual South African businesses. Before Old Mutual, Peter was as an associate in the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs International in London, where he focused on providing investment banking services to major UK and South African clients.
He currently serves as a director on a number of boards of Old Mutual group and Investec companies. He has been serving as a director in the J &J Group board since November 2001.
